Foursome by Harry Robson is a card trick with a twist that'll catch you off guard. That's the whole point, really.

Harry's been using this one for about three decades, so it's fair to say he's ironed out the wrinkles. It slots right into your wallet, and hey, you can even borrow a deck if you need to. Simple enough for a newbie, but there's plenty in it for the old hands too.

No grand setup needed here. You can pull it off at a quiet dinner or when you've got a crowd at a banquet. It's got enough going on to get a few folks involved and the rest gawking.

The Effect

Setup: You toss a prediction card out in plain sight. No secrets here.
Selection: Three people pick cards, and none match the prediction. Nice one.
Twist: Tear that prediction card up, and somehow those torn bits now show the three chosen cards. Magic, eh?
Kicker: A fourth person says they didn't pick a card. You flip over the last piece, and there it is, exactly what they said. Might have to explain to them it's not mind-reading.

Extra Touches

Matthew Wright, who's got a FISM award or two, throws in some extra moves if you fancy getting fancy. Those torn pieces end up swapping with cards in the spectators' hands. Sounds like a mess when you say it, but it works out.

It's close-up magic that anyone can dive into, even if you've never shuffled a deck before.
