So, there's this trick where you fling a deck in the air and catch a card on a sword. It's impressive until you realise you're the one carrying a sword. Not exactly subtle.
"Sky Catch" by Taylor Hughes swaps the sword for a grabber, you know, the thing you use when the remote disappears behind the sofa. It's a bit silly, which is half the fun because everyone knows what it is. And let's face it, it's a lot less awkward to pack than a sword.
Works with a signed card, and you can skip the tricky sleight of hand. I've fiddled with a few Card Sword variations, and this one's so simple it almost feels like cheating. Plus, it folds up, so you're not that person wrestling a sword-alternative into the overhead bin.
You'll get Taylor Hughes's routine, including the bits that actually get laughs. He's been wrapping up shows with this everywhere from Chicago Magic Lounge to Magifest. It's a neat piece of parlour magic that doesn't need much kit but still wows, whether it's 50 folks or 5,000 staring back at you.
If you need a practical closer that's got a bit of charm, "Sky Catch" might just be your new favourite grabber.
I bought this to add a different dimension to a card fountain trick I perform. I haven't used it yet in performance but I'm sure it will become a big part of that trick. It provides a decent amount of humour and visual impact. it's slightly knacky to use but with enough cover it should be fine. I love the idea, I just need to get confident with it.

The practical card sword
Finally a practical version of the card sword effect. Well made and well priced. Highly recommend

It’s alright…. Mine came, and didn’t work like video.
It’s “OK”. It feels it’s been a rushed project by Vanishing Inc.
Box came, you open it and look at the prop. Mine had scuffs and loose metal particals all over it, the screwdriver had been bashing around the box.
Watched the whole video, which doesn’t show you much. And then put it together. Tried it, nope. And again, and again. It didn’t work. Even with slight twakjng. Due to liking a project to work on, I took parts of it apart, and have made it work for 90% of the trick. The bit where the card is, doesn’t lay flat and is not great.
Overall, disappointing for £90 and which I didn’t buy ngl.

I have been playing around with this a bit and it works well. It does need a small amount of preparation depending on the effect you want to perform but this is very easy to do. The gimmicks are provided but you will need to provide a matching deck as that is not supplied.
